An Update on COVID-19 from the Canada Japan Society

Given the current situation with COVID-19 and social distancing, the CJS regretfully will have to cancel our April and May Ichimokukai events in order to abide by the directions from Public Health agencies, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Toronto. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely, and we will hopefully be able to return to our regular events soon.
During this period of quite intense social separation, there are some things that we all can do to help keep everyone safe:
  • Please continue to listen to the advice and direction from our public health agencies: keep a safe physical distance from others, and maintain good hygiene practices (especially thorough hand washing).
  • Working from home? Here are some links to help you establish a new working normal in the current situation:
  • If you have a public library card (for example, Toronto Public Library), there are many good resources available online to help pass the time while practising social distancing.
  • Please continue to support local restaurants, especially those in the Japanese community, through ordering take-away or purchasing gift certificates if available.
  • If you are able to, please consider donating to charities that support the vulnerable in our community, like local food banks.
There is a lot happening in the world right now, and much of it is upsetting and scary. While we all focus on physical health, make sure to maintain good mental health as well.
  • Both the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) have resources on dealing with the stress and anxiety of the current health situation, including advice on talking to children who may be under a great deal of mental stress at the moment
  • Do your best to get some physical activity each day, especially now that the weather is getting a nicer. Physical activity is shown to have some positive benefit on mental health. And don’t worry – Netflix will still be there when you get back.
  • Maintain contact with friends and family. This can be especially challenging for those with family in Japan, but thankfully technology can help us bridge those physical distances. Help them, and let them help you.
  • If you are starting to feel like things are getting overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out – to family, to friends, to the community, and to professionals if need be.
We hope that you, your family, your friends, and our community stay safe and healthy – and we look forward to warmly welcoming you to an event soon.

At IMK you will receive special food and drink discounts, get to talk to lots of interesting people, and have the chance to win some exciting door prizes.

We hope to see you there and please come early to ensure a good seat!
