May 2nd, 2019 - Ichimokukai ・一木会

May’s IMK will feature musical performances by musicians Hiro Suzuki and Celine Tsai. They will be performing jazz and pop covers.

Hiro Suzuki is a jazz guitarist born in Kanagawa, Japan. He began playing guitar at age 13, and started drums at 15. During college, he played in the orchestra pit for several musicals, including Hairspray and Bye Bye Birdie. After winning a jazz competition for college students in Tokyo (2012), he taught guitar at Kurosawa Music School for over 3 years. He currently performs and teaches in Toronto.

Celine Tsai is a singer and actor from Vancouver. She began singing in choral and jazz groups as a child, and formally studied Musical Theatre Performance at Sheridan College in Oakville. Celine is the 2018 winner of the Syd & Shirley Banks Prize, an esteemed musical theatre prize awarded to two emerging performers every year. She starred as Belle in YPT’s 2017-2018 production of Beauty and the Beast, and was a featured vocalist at the Musical Stage Company’s Uncovered concert series. In 2014, Celine released an EP of five original songs. TV/film credits include: In the Dark (CW), Ready or Not (Fox), Love Alaska (Brainpower), My Perfect Romance (Brainpower), Stealing School (Li Dong), Mayday (Discovery), Rising Suns (NTDTV), Flint (Sony), and How to Buy a Baby (CBC). Celine wrote and directed the 2018 short films Everbliss and Picking Things Up. In her spare time, Celine coaches English pronunciation and studies Japanese.

Ichimokukai (IMK) literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since 1995 it has been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event, naturally on the first Thursday of every month. It is a great place to make new friends, practice your English and/or Japanese, informally network, learn more about life in Canada and Japan, and most of all have fun! Our attendees are usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50 percent Japanese, all with a common interest or connection with Japan. At IMK you will receive special food and drink discounts, get to talk to lots of interesting people, and have the chance to win some exciting door prizes.
We hope to see you there and please come early to ensure a good seat!

May 14th, 2019 - CJS Axe Throwing

Back by popular demand, CJS is having its 2nd Axe Throwing event. This is a sport somewhat sort of remotely similar to throwing darts in the sense you want to hit the bullseye, except instead of darts, it's with axes, so it's waaaay more fun!! 😜

BATL - Backyard Axe Throwing League is the original Backyard Axe Throwing League in Toronto. What started in a backyard in 2006, is now an 11-location operation all across North America. This CJS event will be held at the Toronto-East location at
