<span style="font-family: Arcon;">Given the current situation with COVID-19 and social distancing, the CJS regretfully will have to cancel our April and May Ichimokukai events in order to abide by the directions from Public Health agencies, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Toronto. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely, and we will hopefully be able to return to our regular events soon.</span></div>

It is a great place to make new friends, practice your English and/or Japanese, informally network, learn more about life in Canada and Japan, and most of all have fun! Our attendees are usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50 percent Japanese, all with a common interest or connection with Japan. At IMK you will receive special food and drink discounts, get to talk to lots of interesting people, and have the chance to win some exciting door prizes.<br />

They will be performing jazz and pop covers.<div>
<br />Hiro Suzuki is a jazz guitarist born in Kanagawa, Japan. He began playing guitar at age 13, and started drums at 15. During college, he played in the orchestra pit for several musicals, including Hairspray and Bye Bye Birdie. After winning a jazz competition for college students in Tokyo (2012), he taught guitar at Kurosawa Music School for over 3 years. He currently performs and teaches in Toronto.</div>

<br />Celine Tsai is a singer and actor from Vancouver. She began singing in choral and jazz groups as a child, and formally studied Musical Theatre Performance at Sheridan College in Oakville. Celine is the 2018 winner of the Syd & Shirley Banks Prize, an esteemed musical theatre prize awarded to two emerging performers every year. She starred as Belle in YPT’s 2017-2018 production of Beauty and the Beast, and was a featured vocalist at the Musical Stage Company’s Uncovered concert series. In 2014, Celine released an EP of five original songs. TV/film credits include: In the Dark (CW), Ready or Not (Fox), Love Alaska (Brainpower), My Perfect Romance (Brainpower), Stealing School (Li Dong), Mayday (Discovery), Rising Suns (NTDTV), Flint (Sony), and How to Buy a Baby (CBC). Celine wrote and directed the 2018 short films Everbliss and Picking Things Up. In her spare time, Celine coaches English pronunciation and studies Japanese.</div>

Please join us Thursday, April 18th as the Canada Japan Society, in partnership with the Japan Foundation of Toronto, presents a talk with York University professor Ted Goossen entitled, Olympic Dreams: Tokyo Real and Imagined, from 1964 to 2020. A look at Tokyo's evolution over 50+ years, as portrayed in film and literature.<br /><br />In this talk, Prof. Goossen will explore the city of Tokyo and the symbolism of the Olympics of 1964 and, again, of 2020. He will include references to works by the two Murakamis, Coin-Locker Babies (Ryu), and The Hard-Boiled Wonderland and The End of the World (Haruki), as well as the anime Akira.<br /><br />Theodore (Ted) Goossen is Professor of Humanities at York University in Toronto, Canada, a founding member of the Department of Contemporary Literary Studies at the University of Tokyo, and a co-founder of the Canada Japan Society. He has translated many Japanese authors including Hiromi Kawakami, Yukio Mishima, and Haruki Murakami and is editor of The Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories and co-editor of Monkey Business International, the first Japanese literary magazine to be made available in an English version.<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

After winning a jazz competition for college students in Tokyo (2012), he taught guitar at Kurosawa Music School for over 3 years. He currently performs and teaches in Toronto.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sunghee Yoon is a musician born in Seoul, South Korea.
