Japan Now Lecture Series: Mar. 10

The Consulate General of Japan in Toronto will be hosting a lecture series entitled GREEN JAPAN: COMBINING TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION, ECONOMIC GROWTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY on the afternoon of March 10 (2 - 4 PM) at the Munk School of Global Affairs (1 Devonshire Place, Room 108, North House). February 2nd, 2017 - February ICHIMOKUKAI

Hello, everyone! We may not have much snow but it's still a bit cold out here….and there is nowhere better to get warm than with the Canada Japan Society at ICHIMOKUKAI! We’re back to our regular schedule of the first Thursday of the month at the cozy confines of Manpuku.

Ichimokukai literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since 1995 it has been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event, naturally on the first Thursday of every month. It is a great place to make new friends, practice your English and/or Japanese, informally network, learn more about life in Canada and Japan, and most of all have fun! Our attendees are usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50 percent Japanese, all with a common interest or connection with Japan. At IMK you will receive special food and drink discounts, get to talk to lots of interesting people, and have the chance to win some exciting door prizes…..and get information on Bonenkai and a multitude of CJS upcoming events.

February 12, 2017th - Community Event - RAKUGO - TRADITIONAL JAPANESE COMIC STORY-TELLING (with English Subtitles)

Get ready to laugh this February! The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host a “Rakugo-kai” with veteran Rakugo star Yanagiya Sankyo.
He became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan VI and received the high shin’uchi rank in 1981. A gifted performer, he is famous for his ability to portray the subtlest emotions of a character during a performance.

 

In rakugo, a lone storyteller in traditional garb sits on stage. Using only a paper fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch, tone, and a slight turn of the head.  Absolutely fascinating and guaranteed to leave you laughing.

Thursday January 12th 2017 – JAPAN NOW Lecture Series; “Japan’s Global Reach: Development Cooperation and Foreign Policy”

Our good friends at the Japanese Consulate in Toronto (in collaboration with the University of Toronto and the Munk School of Global Affairs) are continuing their JAPAN NOW Lecture series on Thursday, January 12^th between 2 and 4pm at the Vivian and David Campbell Conference Facility (Munk School of Global Affairs)  Professor Akihiko Tanaka from the University of Tokyo will be presenting “Japan’s Global Reach: Development Cooperation and Foreign Policy”. 

 

Japan has been engaged in development cooperation throughout the world since the 1950s. The initial efforts of development cooperation were made to augment and reinforce the postwar settlements with the countries invaded by Japan. Japan’s development cooperation expanded quantitatively and geographically in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the projects conducted in this period illustrate Japan’s approach to international development cooperation, an approach that emphasizes both human capacity development and infrastructure building. Reviewing the history of Japan’s activities globally, Professor Tanaka would discuss challenges Japan faces in the 21st century as a civilian power.

Akihiko Tanaka is Professor of International Politics at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, The University Tokyo. He served as President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from April, 2012 to September, 2015. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in International Relations at the University of Tokyo and Ph.D. in Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has numerous books and articles on world politics and security issues in Japanese and English, including The New Middle Ages: The World System in the 21st Century (Tokyo: The International House of Japan, 2002). He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2012 for his academic achievements.
